On behalf of our undergraduate students, graduate students, alumni and faculty, welcome to the Website of the History Department of the University of Waterloo.
Our department was established as a separate department in the Faculty of Arts in 1964, 7 years after the founding of the university. Since that time, we have grown to a department of 14 faculty members and offer three undergraduate degrees (3 year general BA, 4 year general BA, and Honours BA) as well as the MA and PhD, which are offered in conjunction with our Tri-University partners, Wilfrid Laurier University and the University of Guelph. We also work closely with history faculty at the affiliated colleges of St. Jerome's, Conrad Grebel, and Renison University.
Undergraduate students will find a range of fascinating courses, both thematic and national, and exceptional instructors. Faculty members in the department pride themselves on the rigour in their courses and their dedication to the subject. We are pleased to have on faculty three winners of the Distinguished Teacher Award - a distinct honour considering that students nominate professors for this award.
Graduate students will find a choice of course offerings that would be the envy of most institutions. The Tri-University typically mounts 15-18 M.A. seminars per term, and PhD students can expect to have most fields offered every year.
I hope you will enjoy a challenging and rewarding intellectual journey with us.
